Easy win you can do to improve your AEO

AEO is all the rage at the moment on the likes of Linkedin and SEO chatter but with no actional items alongside it.

Here is one simple way you can improve your AEO.

Add a llms.txt to your site

A llms.txt file is a plain text file written in markdown for AI robots to read what you and your brand is about. It strips down the content to what is important for them to know and make a decision to show you to the right user.

An example of this would be: Imagine you open a car magazine, you automatically bypass all of the Ads, editors notes and offers that are built to distract you and you go straight to the article about the car you love (the reason you picked it up). Thisi is what a LLMS.txt allows AI robots to do.

Create your llms.txt

1. Open text edit (on mac) or note pad (on pc) or a notes app.
2. Copy the text below and paste it into your app
3. replace the content with what you and your brand does, remove anything that is not needed such as a portfolio.
4. Save your file as llms.txt and nothing else
5. Depending how your website is set up you will need to add it to your website.
   
   1. Webflow
      
      1. Site settings > SEO > upload llms.txt file
   2. Framer
      
      1. Domain settings > files > upload fille and set path to /
   3. Wix
      
      1. Wix automatically adds your llms.txt to your site but you can check and edit it by going to SEO settings > tools and settings > llms.txt file > more actions > edit
   4. WordPress or custom set up
      
      1. Login to your server and FTP your file to the root folder, the same place as robots.txt
6. Publish and check you can access the page by YOURDOMAINNAME.co.uk/llms.txt
7. If it loads then you have done it correctly!

Write 2-3 sentences expanding on what you do, who your ideal client is, and what makes you different. Think of this as your elevator pitch for AI tools. Avoid jargon. Plain, clear language works best.

How often should you update your llms.txt file

2-4 times a year max for small businesses. This really needs to highlight the key messages, services and brand voice that you have. If the AI needs more information then they will crawl more of the site to give its user the best answer.

Update it when:

• You add or remove a service
• You launch a new key page (a case study, a new resource)
• Your target audience shifts
• You move platforms or change your main tools
• Your location or working arrangements change (e.g. you go from solo to having a team)
• Your brand changes

You don't need to update it for:

• New blog posts (just make sure the blog URL is already listed)
• Minor copy tweaks on existing pages
• Seasonal promotions or offers
