Uninvited Redesign: Notion template marketplace user experience task flow

As part of my UI/UX course I decided to redesign the template install user flow for Notion. I explored the current user flow, identified frustrations and then redesigned them using Figma.

Before and After

Project Overview

Persona

Mel is a frequent user of notion, she uses it for work to help organise tasks and personal goals. Mel has frustrations when installing new templates into notion.

Frustrations

  1. When looking for a template I want to be able to filter via paid or free
  2. I want to install the template directly from notion and not via download
  3. If something is marked as free but then paid later - its misleading
  4. Not enough information is given about the template until you go to the individual page

What I plan to do

  1. Add a filtering system to the market page
  2. Add ratings to the search area for more info
  3. Add a short description to the market page for each template
  4. Add a badge to say when a template is 3rd party and requires download
  5. Make it easier to get to the same template in less steps

What I do not plan to do

  1. Change the fonts or colours of notion
  2. Change the overall style of notion

Learnings after 1st draft

  • id forgotten to tell the user what the results are for: added text to the search results page
  • id initially designed the template cards without buttons for the marketplace page but then upon reflection I changed them to have buttons because I want the user to be able to try out the template as quick as possible
  • I am not sure that having the information button as a circle and i in it is enough to suggest more details.  In this case I would swap over the ‘preview’ button for ‘more details’ but would need to do some user testing to see how people would use it
  • 3rd party is difficult because some put it as free but when you go to the website its not which is false advertising. But if I have the 3rd party in the tag then the user doesn't know how much it is. This led me to change the button from ‘view template’ to ‘buy template $49’

Summary

I focused on reducing friction between me looking for a template to actually installing and using it. I managed to get it down from 7 interactions to 5 or less.
